We are all devastated to learn about the horrific murder and alleged rape of 8-year-old Sandra Cantu from Tracy, California. Melissa Huckabee, a Sunday school teacher and mother to a little girl herself, has been charged with the murder of little Sandra with special circumstances of kidnapping, the performance of lewd and lascivious acts upon a child under 14 and rape.
Pastor Aaron Jayne from the LA Dream Center was a guest on Wednesday’s Dr. Phil show, which was dedicated to Sandra Cantu. Dr. Phil asked Pastor Aaron if the church was wrong for giving her (Melissa Huckabee) a medal of credibility and allowing her to be involved in the church and Sunday school.
Pastor Aaron replied “this is a huge wake up call to churches all over America that we have a responsibility to create a safe environment for children and minors. Every church in America needs to do a full screening and background check anybody working with minors or children. And if they don’t publish that, if they don’t make that common knowledge within the congregation, I would tell parents do not go to that church, if they are not screening their workers, don’t go to that church. This is a wakeup call.”
I couldn’t agree more. One of the many responsibilities as leaders of the church is to create and preserve a safe environment in which people can know the presence of God and relate to one another without fear of personal violation or exploitation.
A part of that responsibility is exercising due diligence taking reasonable steps to assure the existence of a safe environment for our children and youth. Background checks of church staff, LifeSavers Children’s Ministry volunteers and Grid 29:11 Youth Ministry volunteers are examples of such due diligence. Background checks allow our staff to screen out individuals who might be unsuitable for these particular ministries.
At The Rock Church we communicate that our LifeSavers Children’s Ministry is top notch, our Grid 29:11 youth ministry is like nothing else in this city, and that our leaders are trained, capable and excited to partner with you, to teach your child/youth the truths of Jesus Christ. We also want you to know that safety is our number one priority. Each week, hundreds of parents entrust us with the care and education of their children and we honor, protect and uphold that trust.
If you have any further questions about the policies and procedures related to the training and implementation of our volunteers, or if I can answer any questions, please contact me directly at shannah@trclife.com.
Our prayers are with the Cantu family, may God’s grace be ever present in times ahead.
It makes me sigh every time I log on. I'm changing things around so stay tuned..
Jayce wears a size 12 or 13 shoe. And he is super picky. Selected Emerica's are on sale at Nordstrom rack for 35% the last marked price. He got a pair last night for $25 bucks. NICE.
GI Joe's is going out of business. I heard the sale starts this Friday. The closest one is in Lake Stevens. Need lifejackets for summer? Fishing gear? Soccer shoes for fall? Sunglasses? This is the place.
Queen Bee in Snohomish is closing. This makes me super sad. It is one of my favorite stores. Great finds for your home, and Mother's Day is a month away...
WOW. I have been surprised at the amount of emails that I have been receiving lately that are just plain rude.*
After a long walk through several neighboorhoods tonight, I was thinking about it in a relaxed, neutral frame of mind. A lot of random thoughts were flying though my brain like the nyse ticker...
Why?
What makes people so delusional?
Are you a light a fire and leave it kind of person?
Do you need to barf or do you really want resolution?
If the latter than wouldn't it be better to have a conversation? Face to face. Over a deeeeelish hot beverage?
Do you think the things you are saying or are you not owning up to what you are feeling and instead are shoving the blame on someone else?
Do you not think that I am honestly trying to do good every day and most people around me are trying just as hard?
Do you expect other people to do your share of the work?
I'm just throwing it out there...
Are we becoming accustomed to speaking our mind via twitter/facebook/blogging that we just launch? This isn't aimed at anyone. I'm wondering in general. Are we becoming ruder as a society? It's just something I noticed lately. I wonder if anyone else has noticed it too.
*stop freaking out. It isn't you.
It has been almost a month since I last posted...CRAZY!
Lots of Habich craziness has been going on...details....details...and the word of the day...CRAZY!
- Carter is 9 today! He has been crazy busy with football. He is playing on an arena league for Spring. His first game is tomorrow. I just purchased him adidas samba indoor football shoes. They run small so they are a size 8.5. Good times! He was so covered in mud after yesterday's rainstorm, I drove right by him at practice because I didn't recognize him and I thought for sure he wasn't mine covered from head to toe in MUD.
- Jayce made the honor roll. He is one smart kid! Jayce has been snowboarding like crazy, and was stuck on the pass last weekend during the crazy windstorm we had. Stevens has a 104 inch base, so he has been reporting "it was the best SNOW ever!" after each weekend at the pass. He has also been spending a lot of time up at the race shop with Roger...
- Rog is in full race car mode. Haven't seen him since Christmas...just kidding. Rog has been under the gun trying to get two race cars completed for practice. Last week rained out so they are hoping to get Natalie some laps this weekend, however the forecast doesn't look promising...He mentioned this morning he just wanted a little sleep. Hopefully they are on the home stretch and life will return to Habich normal shortly...ya right...
- The last month at TRC has been awesome. Months and months of planning and preparation have all come to one (well two) moment(s)..the launch of the new website www.therockchurch.info and the soft launch of The Rock Church Lake Stevens Campus! Two huge milestones! Everyone has worked extremely hard to reach the level of excellence we have grown accustomed to at TRC. I love this team and I am honored to be a part of it.
- I celebrated my 39th birthday here:
The team did an awesome job presenting this on Sunday. Part II of Salvaged is tomorrow at 9:39 & 11:30 at The Rock Church. Click here for part one from last weekend.
Red Bull is flat nasty. It tastes like cough syrup. I don't know how people drink this stuff. I'm drinking it because I am grouchy. I thought the B vitamins would help me be less grouchy. I'll let you know if it works.
Or if you feel safe, you can ask ME if it worked.
Or tell me that it didn't work. When you are clear of me.
Unless you're holding weapon.
Then you can tell me if the Red Bull didn't work.
UPDATE:
Yes. It works.
Yes. It would be easier to take B vitamins but I had access to a Red Bull. :)
However, I just tasted a RED BULL COLA and that my friends is DEELISH!
on VBS & Kids CAMP!
